SAGAING, Myanmar - According to a statement made on Monday by a Sagaing-based chapter of the Chinland Defence Force (CDF), an army captain who defected from the military a couple of weeks ago is presently in a safe place with his family.
According to the statement, Captain Kaung Thu Win surrendered to the CDF on December 23 because he "no longer wanted to serve" Myanmar's military junta.
CDF spokesperson said the prestigious Defence Services Academy graduate served as an officer at a tactical base in Chin State's Matupi Township and an intelligence officer and acting police chief in Sagaing Region's Monywa Township.
Pyi Thu Yin Khwin, or People's Embrace, a group founded to encourage security personnel to join the Civil Disobedience Movement, stated that more than 8,000 soldiers and police officers had defected in the first ten months following the February 1 military takeover.
He added that thousands of military people had surrendered to opposition forces, including ten army majors and hundreds of lieutenants and captains.
