EAST JAVA, Indonesia: A tourist bus crashed into a billboard on a highway on Indonesia's main island of Java this week, killing at least 14 people and injuring 19 others.
East Java traffic police chief Latief Usman said the bus, which was carrying Indonesian tourists from Surabaya, the capital of East Java province, was returning from a trip to the mountain resort of Central Java's Dieng Plateau when it struck a billboard on the Mojokerto toll road just after dawn.
In televised news reports, police and medical personnel were shown removing victims from the bus.
Usman said police are still investigating the cause of the accident, but the driver, who suffered serious injuries and has not yet been questioned by the police, reportedly appeared drowsy before the crash.
Nineteen people were being treated in four hospitals in Mojokerto, many for broken bones, said officials.
Due to poor safety standards and infrastructure, road accidents are common in Indonesia.
