ISLAMABAD, Pakistan - Following the recent appearance of back-to-back wildfire videos involving TikTokers, wildlife officials have demanded that the government pass legislation to protect the country's forests.
A few days ago, a video of two young people setting fire to the forest at Margalla Hills for the sake of a TikTok video drew widespread condemnation and outrage. A TikToker can be seen lighting the forest on fire with a lighter in the video.
Another viral video featured a female TikToker who set fire to the woods to add "dramatic effects" to her video. Dozens of trees were burned to ashes to create a dramatic effect for viewers to see in the video.
Previously, another TikToker set fire to a forest in Abbottabad. Wildlife officials eventually apprehended him.
Chairperson Islamabad Wildlife Management Board Rina S Khan Satti said on Twitter after sharing the video of the female TikToker, "Young people desperate for followers are setting fire to our forests during this hot & dry season!"
She emphasized the importance of legislation by stating that those who start wildfires face life in prison in Australia.
"We need to pass similar legislation," she demanded.
