DHAKA, Bangladesh - Abdul Gaffar Chowdhury, a veteran journalist, and columnist, has died. He was 87 years old.
According to his family members, he died of a cardiac arrest at a London hospital Thursday morning.
He was the editor-in-chief of the weekly Joybangla, the Mujibnagar government's mouthpiece, in 1971. Despite having lived in London since 1974, he was a staunch supporter of the Liberation War, Bangabandhu, and liberal values.
Gaffar Chowdhury is best known for penning the lyrics "Amar Bhaier Rokte Rangano," a song commemorating the Bengali Language Movement.
In a condolence message, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said, "Bangladesh has lost the wisdom of a legend who has enriched the nation's history and culture through his writings and research."
