BEIJING, China - China says it applauds Nepal's decision to withdraw from the United States government's State Partnership Program-SPP.
Wang Wenbin, China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson, said on Thursday at a regular press briefing that China commends the Nepali government's decision [not to proceed with the SPP] as a friendly and close neighbor and strategic cooperative partner.
The Chinese government's statement comes three days after the Sher Bahadur Deuba Cabinet decided not to proceed with the SPP on Monday.
"Various political parties and factions, the government, the army, and people across Nepalese society see the SPP as a military and security initiative closely linked to the Indo-Pacific Strategy," Wang explained, "and they consider membership in the SPP to be against Nepal's long-held non-aligned, balanced foreign policy."
On Thursday, Wang stated that China would continue to support Nepal's sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, as well as its commitment to an independent and non-aligned foreign policy.
"China stands ready to collaborate with Nepal to ensure regional security, stability, and shared prosperity," he stated.
