NAYPYIDAW, Myanmar - Military leadership has announced a six-month extension of the country's state of emergency.
After Senior General Min Aung Hlaing seized power in a coup in February 2021, deposing the democratically elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi, the ruling State Administration Council (SAC) declared a state of emergency for the first time.
According to state media, Min Aung Hlaing will extend the state of emergency after the military's national defense and security council "unanimously supported" the proposal.
"In our country, we must continue to strengthen the 'genuine and disciplined multi-party democratic system' that the people desire," Min Aung Hlaing was quoted as saying by the state-run Global New Light newspaper.
The decision follows the SAC's announcement last month of the execution of four anti-coup activists, including a close ally of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, which drew condemnation from human rights organizations and countries including the United States, Japan, and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
According to Yadanar Maung, a spokesperson for the activist group Justice For Myanmar, the extension lacks a legal foundation.
"It is imperative that the international community rejects this sham and holds the junta accountable for its ongoing war crimes and crimes against humanity," Maung said.
