KATHMANDU, Nepal - The body of German climber Luis Stitzinger has been airlifted from Mt Kanchenjunga to Kathmandu, according to the expedition organizer.
"Luis's body, discovered at 8,400m, was airlifted to Kathmandu Saturday afternoon from Camp I of Mt Kanchenjunga," said Mingma Sherpa, chairman of Seven Summit Treks.
On May 25, Luis lost contact from around 8,500m after climbing the world's third-highest peak without supplemental oxygen.
"Luis's body has been kept at TU Teaching Hospital for postmortem," said Sherpa.
On May 30, a team of five Sherpa climbers from SST involved in a search and rescue mission discovered Luis at around 8,400m.
On May 25, Luis and other climbers were standing atop the mountain.
Luis, an officially certified mountain and ski guide, was born in Fssem in 1968 and had been exploring the mountains since he was a child. He has been one of Germany's most active mountaineers for many years. He has climbed many mountains without using bottled oxygen. According to sources, Luis planned to ski down the mountain this season.
Luis skied down Gasherbrum II (8,035m), Nanga Parbat (8,125m), Broad Peak (8,051m), K2 (8,611m), Manaslu (8,163m), Shisha Pangma (8,027m), and the north face of Pik Lenin (7,134m).
